DISCOVERYCENTER’S “KIDS KRAFT CLUB” OFFERS SHOFAR FACTORY
Preparing for Rosh Hashanah children will discover the art of Shofar-making
Attendees of the next Kids Kraft Club, a pre-holiday craft club for children, are preparing for a unique program. Participants will see how a ram's horn is cured, measured, sawed, drilled and polished. The result will be a “Shofar”, used on Rosh Hashanah and at the end of Yom Kippur. When the Shofar is complete, participants will then learn how to blow it and sound the traditional notes.
This unique educational program, designed to educate children as well as adults in the fundamentals of the ancient Shofar,* is being introduced to the Mason/West Chester community by The Jewish Discovery Center as the Jewish community prepares to usher in the Jewish New Year, 5767.
“We believe that the ‘hands-on’ and experiential approach is the best way to teach,” said Rabbi Yosef Y. Kalmanson, Director of The Jewish Discovery Center. “With the High Holidays around the corner, now is the most preeminent time to educate children to ‘call out’ for G‑d to bless us with a peaceful year of happiness and good health, as the Shofar is utilized to ‘call out.’”
The pre-holiday Kids Kraft Club will help community members learn about the significance and history of the Shofar in a hands-on, fun, educational way. The innovative program also includes craft projects, Jewish books and other early learning teaching methods. Children have the chance to enjoy edible arts and crafts, songs, circle time, and snacks. The workshop will also have different Shofars from around the world on display along with mounted heads of horned animals.
The Kids Kraft Club program and Shofar Factory will be open the entire community on Tuesday, September 19th, 1:00 – 2:30 PM, at The Jewish Discovery Center’s new facility, 7587 Central Parke Blvd., (corner of Cedar Village Dr off Mason-Montgomery Rd.), in Mason. The fee is $10. Call The Jewish Discovery Center for more information, (531-DISCOVER), email [email protected] or log onto www.JDiscovery.com.

*About the Shofar:
The Shofar is one of the most ancient instruments in the world. As biblically mandated, it has been sounded by Jews around the globe on the holiday of Rosh Hashana for over 3,000 years. It is the one biblical commandment associated with the Day of Judgment; Rosh Hashana.
The sounding of the Shofar is the climactic point of the High Holiday drama. In addition to the many rabbinical explanations given for this commandment, Kabalistic sources credit it with softening Divine Judgment and dispelling the forces of evil.
