Our Curriculum

We're impressed with our curriculum, now it's your turn! We hope to engage your child's sense of identity by capturing his/her imagination and attention. So, we put a lot of effort into providing our students with substantive lessons and a positive atmosphere.

The lessons are multi-sensory and hands-on, ensuring that the students truly experience what they are being taught. The lessons are structured with discussion-starters, creating a lively, interactive classroom experience with joyful discovery. Role-playing, arts & crafts, concrete experiences, and songs are incorporated to help make the lessons enjoyable. The information truly becomes the student's own.

Special programs are planned during the year, such as Shabbat Dinners, Shofar Factory, Chanukah Activities, Purim Carnival, Passover Seder, and more.  We believe that the joy and pride in Judaism that is experienced at the Discovery Hebrew School makes an indelible impression upon the children, as they joyfully discover its vibrancy.

Our Hebrew reading curriculum uses the latest educational breakthrough. The acclaimed Aleph Champ program will ensure that your child will read fluently at the end of his/her Hebrew School experience. Based on the martial arts motivational philosophy of color coded levels and testing, Aleph Champ provides excitement and inspiration, leading the students into a winning cycle of learning.

The Hebrew alphabet as well as the vowels and word formations are divided into 10 colored levels. The students start out as "White Aleph Champs", working their way up the colors of the rainbow to be a "Black Aleph Champ" like their teachers. Games, cards, logs and rewards make every step along this remarkable journey a fun and educational success.

Children will start to learn simple, basic prayers and blessings.  We will make a tape of the children singing the prayers so that they will be able to continue at home if they would like to.

As they grow, the children gain confidence and familiarity with the Prayer Book.

Children will be introduced to our Avot (Patriarchs) and Imahot(Matriarchs) and other Jewish heroic figures, to be viewed as role models.  They will be taught morals and ethics from those highlighted in the weekly Torah portion.  The children will gain an appreciation of our heritage and culture that has been preserved throughout the ages while increasing their knowledge of, and affection for, the land of Israel and its people.

Study of the weekly Torah portion provides our students with practical lessons to apply in our daily lives.

Children will learn to appreciate the special quality and holiness of Shabbat and Holidays.  They will become familiar with the historical background, customs, and observances of each festival through stories, songs, activities and projects.

Exploring the traditions and celebration of the Jewish Holidays and Shabbat will provide a deeper understanding for our students.

Beginning with the origins of the Mitzvot, stressing practical applications in our daily lives, our students will explore a personal Jewishness. Mitzvot emphasized are Tzedakah (charity), loving, caring and respecting one another, hospitality, honoring parents, and blessings. We encourage parents of younger children to let us know of a Mitzvah your child has done with a “Mitzvah note” as it really makes the child feel special.
