 DISCOVERYCENTER’S “KIDS KRAFT CLUB” SUCCESS

Over 25 children gathered at the new Jewish Discovery Center facility, Tuesday, September 19, to see how a ram's horn is cured, measured, sawed, drilled and polished. At the “Shofar Factory,” presented by Rabbi Berel Cohen of Chabad’s Living Legacy program, participants experientially discovered how to make a bona fide “Shofar”, used on Rosh Hashanah and at the end of Yom Kippur.

This unique discovery program, designed to educate children as well as adults in the fundamentals of the ancient Shofar, was introduced to the Mason/West Chester community by The Jewish Discovery Center as the Jewish community prepared to usher in the Jewish New Year, 5767.

“We believe that the ‘hands-on’ and experiential approach is the best way to teach,” said Rabbi Yosef Y. Kalmanson, Director of The Jewish Discovery Center. “We wanted to educate children to experience the sensation of ‘calling out’ for G‑d to bless us with a peaceful year of happiness and good health, as the Shofar is utilized to ‘call out.’”

The Shofar Factory, featured as part of the pre-holiday Kids Kraft Club, helped community members interactively learn about the significance of the Shofar. The innovative Rosh Hashanah learning afternoon also included craft projects, as children made their own ram’s horns hats. Jewish books and other early learning teaching methods were utilized as children snacked on apples dipped in honey and honey cake, created their own bee puppet, enjoyed songs and a story read from a large Rosh Hashanah book, joyfully discovering the special traditions of the holiday. The workshop also had different Shofars from around the world on display along with mounted heads of horned animals.

Sponsored by The Jewish Discovery Center (www.JDiscovery.com), the Kids Craft Club, for children ages 2-5, meets before each Jewish holiday. Jewish Holidays, values and traditions are taught in a hands-on, fun, interactive and experiential manner that includes craft projects, Jewish books, songs, manipulatives, and other early learning teaching methods.
