Chanukah, the original Festival of Lights, saw families from Warren, Butler and northern Hamilton counties gather at Jewish Discovery Center, ‘Center for Jewish Life’ in Mason to enjoy the “‘Yes We Can’ Chanukah Family Experience”.
Held Dec. 24, the fourth night of the 8-day holiday, the event featured interactive Chanukah centers, edible menorah crafts, Greek dinner, a variety of different latkes and Chanukah foods, a Grand Dreidel Game, and the lighting of region’s first ‘Can-Norah’!
Over 100 area families donated 872 cans, according to Rabbi Yosef Kalmanson, the center’s director. “We surpassed our goal of collecting 1,000 pounds and made history by lighting a giant ‘Can-Norah’ for the first time in the Mason-area!” Kalmanson said.
The holiday commemorates the triumph of good over evil and increasing light to eliminate the darkness, he said.
“Now we will ‘increase light’ and help eliminate hunger by giving the cans collected to be distributed by two wonderful area organizations – the Lebanon Food Pantry and Jewish Family Service.”
There were 105 Chanukah coins in the “Guess the Gelt” jar and 7-year old Sara Naveh of Mason guessed the exact amount and won the “Mitzvah Match” game.
The Jewish Discovery Center, the “Center for Jewish Life” serving Warren, Butler and Northern Hamilton counties, offers numerous classes and educational opportunities to study more about Judaism and its relevance to the post-modern Jew.
